New York, 3 set. - (Adnkronos/Dpa) - Per adesso e' raggiungibile soltanto in aereo, ma presto potra' essere "visitato" anche dagli utenti di Google Street View: Cambridge Bay, il villaggio Inuit nel Canada settentrionale, sara' presto inserito nelle mappe a vista panoramica di Google che, considerate le difficolta' nel raggiungere il villaggio, ha inviato un'equipe di biciclette dotata degli strumenti necessari alle riprese fotografiche.
"Le persone pensano che viviamo in igloo e viaggiamo trainati dai cani da slitta", ha spiegato al New York Times Chris Kalluk, residente di Cambridge Bay. La richiesta di includere nelle mappe di Google anche il piccolo villaggio era partita proprio dagli abitanti del posto, per far conoscere in tutto il mondo il loro luogo nati'o. Un portavoce di Google ha spiegato che ci vorranno diversi mesi prima di poter "visitare" online Cambridge Bay.
Uno dei motivi di questo ritardo ha a che fare con la legge sulla privacy: numerosi bambini del posto infatti, entusiasti per l'inusuale visita, hanno seguito per tutto il percorso le biciclette di Google, che dovra' provvedere ad oscurare i loro volti nelle foto. The Inuit man, Chris Kalluk, said he approached Google with the idea of bringing Street View to the Arctic last year as a way to educate the rest of the world about the region. “People that have never been in the north, past trees, in communities you can only get to by airplanes; they just don’t know,” Mr. Kalluk said by telephone from Cambridge Bay, where he has lived most of his life. “They wonder if we live in igloos and travel by dog team. I spoke with an elder the other day who said that the land belongs to all the people, so everyone should be able to see it.”
Fishing and hunting trips, often covering long distances, remain an important part of life for the Inuit in Cambridge Bay, or Ikaluktutiak as its known in the native Inuinnaqtun language. But because magnetic compasses do not work in the far north, paper maps were rarely used for navigation in the past.
“People got around by recognition,” said Mr. Kalluk, 28, who is a geographical information systems coordinator for Nunavut Tunngavik, an organization that manages land claim settlements between the Inuit and the federal government and runs wildlife management programs.

Effettivamente io pensavo vivessero in tende o case di ghiaccio e girassero con le slitte, ma forse le foto che seguono sono più realistiche
Anche le biciclette usate da google (se sono quelle della foto) mi hanno un po' rovinato la "poesia" , io mi immaginavo super velocipedi estremi per percorsi innevati tipo questi:
Chissà se la gente usa la bicicletta come mezzo di trasporto o per sport o per semplice divertimento in quei luoghi.
Aspettiamo che esca questo street view....
